Updates for 8-6-07

You can definitely tell it is Monday

The tech team has been working like crazy people on the server and database architecture all day. If you experienced any glitches today it was likely caused by them hammering away on the system – not to worry.

Instead of continuing to have you live and breathe our every change and tweak that many times hiccups the system, we might take the site off-line intermittingly over the next 24-72 hours so we can really go to town on executing on our improvement list.

Many of you have been amazing and very helpful during this process. We really appreciate it.

We have also had many people who were naysayers in the beginning become ardent fans after using the new layout and system. By the way, all the new subscribers LOVE It! We have polled them individually. For the rest of us "old-timers", it will be take a little time to get familiar – that is understandable.

“First off, LOVE the new format. Took a while to get used to and I will admit, I didn’t like it at first but now I see how much better it really is. Thank you!!”

“I have to admit that after initially reacting with a strong negative, I think I’m coming around to liking the new interface. I also truly appreciate the blog. It really makes us feel as if Dropshots does indeed care and is listening. Thanks! ”

“You know I really didn’t like the “busy” look of all my pictures on my home page at first. But after showing some of my family members they saw and started commenting on pictures they never saw before, even though they were there for over a year! There really is some wisdom  to this new design. I am a convert!”

Thanks for your continued patience.

We have two goals:
1) to be the fastest, most fun and easiest to use photo and video sharing service in the world and
2) to be your most important resource for sharing memories and staying in touch with family and friends.
We will do this and we are glad you are with us along the way!

okay, thanks for listenning. there is some good stuff in the new layout to be sure. but, what got me hooked in the first place were the following:

    – shuffle thumbnails feature of the year view; really wanted it for the month view as well
    – intuitiveness of the familiar calendar layout
    – timeline representation effected by the horizontal 15 minute lines
    – ease of scrolling through days and weeks of stuff; impossible now if you have hundreds of photos per day as i do; note: this is not a function of system speed, i want to be able to see a few thumbnails of each day to get a sense of what i’m looking for in addition to being able to scroll through every photo as the new system allows
    – live count of photos / videos

I’m growing more comfortable with the changes, and I like the greater ease of captioning photos. However I miss some things: those lines that denoted separation in time, the smileys/icons for comments, and titles for each day. I especially miss the way the caption of the first photo used to show up on my home page; I used to purposely write a intro/summary about the day for the caption of my first photo.

I can’t wait for the search function to come back. I LOVE that the photos are tagged automatically just by the words we use in our captions.

Why do you increase the size of videos? Mine are not high enough resolution to be that big, unfortunately, so they look pixelated now. 🙁

I’m still waiting for you to offer back up archival discs for purchase.

Thanks! You are succeeding in creating a very easy site to use.

    Some features I’d like:

Option to look at the calendar view with one photo per day like it was before… or at the very least, when you view by date, and pick a month, to show the month in order, rather than reversed. I get that when you see it all you’d like to see the most recent first, but it doesn’t make any sense when you choose to look at it by month. Maybe have a “by date”, and “by calendar” option on the left.

I liked the timeliney thing before too…

I’d like an option on how big to show the photos. Especially when I want to link to them somewhere else. The big giant photo isn’t always what I want, and on some blogs, you can’t change the size in code b/c they use that weird “fake HTML” code.

I still don’t like that the little tool bar floats over the picture and pops up and down. Why not just make it static? And it seems “slick” but unnecessarily so (and counterintuitive) the way you edit the day/time (which I think still doesn’t work?) and the captions.

I’ve also just figured out that to do any editing like rotating, or adding a caption, that even though I’m logged on (it says “welcome” and my name), I have to log out and log in in order to get those features to work… Not sure if this is a bug for everyone, or just me…

You guys have been super helpful! And I appreciate that we’re being heard and that our problems are being attended to.

I do love this site, and my husband loves it so much that he’s turning over all of the family photo responsibility to me, instead of trying to maintain his own photo site (he’s a computer geek)….

I am happy with the new look. I know some glitches will have to be worked out. Still having trouble on uploading videos with the new dropbox. Wondering if there is a way to stop IE from opening up dropshots each time a photo is uploaded. I use firefox so IE opening up is just an inconvenience. Thanks.

It would be helpful to have 2 viewing options for video so that we do not have to waste valuable time reloading all the older videos in order for them to not look pixilated.

I am still undecided on my opinion of the upgrade…My initial reaction was very negative, but I also acknowledge that change is hard! I am trying to be patient as changes are made! Your excellent communication and willingness to work with your customers has helped me stick with it!

I would like to second the comment regarding 2 video viewing options. Reloading all of my videos is going to take a long time. I think you mentioned working on a possible fix for this (please keep us posted on this development, I don’t want to begin reloading if it won’t be needed)

A few features I really miss:
-Title for the days events. I do caption photos, but a main title was really a nice feature, especially for a quick glance!
-Calendar view. I really liked the layout, could we have the option to select that view if we prefer it?
-The caption accompanying the photo when a comment is added!

I realize all of these have been mentioned before, but if a number of us miss the same features, maybe they can be returned!
Thank you for all of your hard work and most of all thank you for keeping families in touch when distance keeps us apart!

I love the new set up. I did notice the video now seems shakey. Does this have to do with the new larger resolution?

This bugs me a LOT: “By the way, all the new subscribers LOVE It! We have polled them individually. For the rest of us “old-timers”, it will be take a little time to get familiar – that is understandable.”

What about those of us “old-timers” who loved it before??? You sure as heck didn’t poll US individually!

Once again, I’m very disappointed with what has happened to DropShots. I loved the calendar layout with one photo per day and the ability to view by year/month/week/day. It was simple and intuitive and easy to navigate. It was clean and uncluttered to look at, and I want it back!

Flikr offers the calendar-view, but they don’t do video (yet) and I don’t really necessarily want all of my stuff out there for the world to see — but if y’all can’t give me back my calendar-view, I guess I don’t really have many other options left….

This websidte is unique, impressive and easy to use. Especailly you include album as one of the features. I wonder if there is a glitch or not that in vedio mode, the full screen expansion is not working.

We’re glad that you’re enjoying using our site! The full screen view is not yet available, so that’s why it’s not working. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it’s coming soon!
